If you want to learn all about why your download speed fluctuates and how to fix it, this article is for you. If you are using a Wi-Fi connection, it could be any of the above issues, or something else entirely, such as the number of devices you have connected to your Wi-Fi network. It could also be caused by your software, a virus, or network congestion. If you are using an Ethernet connection, it might be your hardware. Fareham, Isle of Wight, less than 10 miles away are no faster than London and all other uk locations I have tried so far (except Canterbury). Here’s why your download speed fluctuates: Local servers to me as the crow flys, e.g. All the UK ones I have tried so far at home on VF are all usually around 4 to 7 Mbit/s single stream 24/7, with exception so far of Canterbury at 68 Mbit/s. To investigate further for myself at home, I have used the server search textbox to search for other servers to try. I did send both multi and singles to tech 2, morning, afternoon evening, so 6 in all. The speed tests I sent to tech 2 were done on the server selected (the default), I did not select one from the list and let do it's own thing. However when i'm at work or anywhere else and using a BT, Virgin or other broadband it shows a whole host of UK towns / cities on the list.

Many thanks for your input and is strange, is when I use from home on VF superfast, It always only has London servers on the list and no others. I still believe it still falls short of 900mbps that I am paying for however, but an improvement nevertheless.

The overall changes have made a big difference to my connection and download speeds. This was a marked improvement - 4mbps / 8mbps before. I also uploaded a couple of test files (using SmartFTP) to my cloud services (onedrive business / google drive) roughly 2gb in size - onedrive was around 25mbps / 30mbps - Google Drive 45mbps / 60mbps. I also noticed a massive difference on downloading the test files 500meg / 1GB from their test servers port 80 / 81 / 8080 - they were averaging around 35mpbs - 40mpbs (single thread) before (10kbps / 8mpbs) - using a third party app multi thread was averaging 50mpbs / 65mpbs for the same file so throughput could still be a bit higher. I was averaging 0.5mbps to 8.0mbps before I am now getting 110mbps - 150mbps. The thinkbroadband test also yielded far better results specifically the single thread.

The client side reports I am in Bowden GB and it connects to the Manchester, GB | Birmingham, GB | Bracknell, GB servers. Vodafone were always the slowest, but after the recent fix Vodafone Bracknell is very close to the others I was getting the best results from.įast.com I also noticed a massive difference to the speedtest results roughly 3x quicker than before the fix. The following always gave me the best overall sync speed from īytemark Hosting (York) / IPTS (Newcastle) / Aspire Solution (Gateshead) / BT (Preston) Also as the fault is being fixed, that there was a fault is properly acknowledged, and some reparation would be nice! *I was 24hrs away from cancelling our UHD Netflix when the fix hit! Here's hoping that more VF customers will get their streaming speeds back upto speed over the next few days. It regularly used to tell me that my server was in Amsterdam, now it's listing Manchester, Birmingham, and Bracknell! It's interesting looking at the "" more details if you run it, as the detail in there has now changed for me at least. If you are experiencing a fault don't pick the slowest server, but one that that reflects the norm! If you pick the slowest server there's always the chance that it'll point to the wrong solution and won't help get your own connection fixed. If you get a server that doesn't give the results in line with the others you can try a trace route on their server just to check that it is where you think it is. So try a few local ones and see how well they work. When the network is working correctly most UK speedtest servers should give similar results.
